Honestly, people online are cut throat. If you're never played SC before it's probably better to only play custom games with friendly (bad) players, or against the very easy AI, or wait til the game comes out for real and practice in the campaign mode.
Or, if you really do want to get good, and don't mind losing like 95% of your games at first, then jump into playing 1v1 ladder, and watch the replay after each game. Watch what your opponents do to beat you, how they build their base, etc.
Oh, and use hot keys as much as possible. Just like WoW, if you are an ability clicker, you'll be too slow to compete with players who don't click.
